Itinerary
Day 1 - Oaxaca City
Arrival in Oaxaca City. Installation at Hotel Maela, located 30 minutes from the airport. At 18:30, a welcome meeting will introduce the tour guides and outline the trip. Dinner will follow at 19:30, providing an opportunity to meet fellow birding enthusiasts and discuss the exciting bird species we hope to encounter.
Day 2 - Teotitlán
An early start with breakfast at 6:00, followed by departure at 6:40 for Teotitlán del Valle, a popular birding hotspot known for its diverse habitats, approximately 40 minutes from the hotel. Enjoy bird-watching in the area before a 13:00 lunch in Teotitlán del Valle. In the afternoon, visit the local rug weavers to experience Oaxaca’s traditional craftsmanship. At 17:00, return to Hotel Maela in Oaxaca City, with a stop at the famous Tule Tree. Dinner will be at 19:30.
Day 3 - Birding + Valle Nacional
Begin the day with breakfast at 6:00, then pack the car at 6:40. Departure is at 7:00 for La Cumbre, a birding location known for its highland cloud forest (50 minutes from the hotel). Lunch will be enjoyed in the mountains. Spend the afternoon birding along the road, exploring the unique cloud forest habitat. Overnight stay at Hotel Hniu Li in Valle Nacional. Dinner is scheduled for 19:30.
Day 4 - Plan de Flores - Tuxtepec
Breakfast at 6:00, followed by packing the car at 6:40. Depart at 7:00 for Plan de Flores, located 40 minutes from the hotel. Birding in the morning will include lowland forests and open habitats. Lunch is scheduled in Valle Nacional. The afternoon will be spent bird-watching along the scenic road. The day concludes with an overnight stay at Santa Clara Hotel in Tuxtepec. Dinner will be served at 19:30.
Day 5 - Birding + Matias Romero
Breakfast at 6:00, followed by a 6:40 departure to the Tuxtepec Karst habitat, located about 40 minutes from the hotel, where we will explore this unique ecosystem known for its specialized bird species. Lunch will be in Tuxtepec, after which we’ll travel in the afternoon to Matias Romero, a 3.5-hour drive. Check-in at Hotel Maria in Matias Romero. Dinner is scheduled for 19:30.
Day 6 - La Esmeralda Reserve
Breakfast at 6:00, then a 6:40 departure for La Esmeralda Reserve, approximately 1.5 hours from the hotel. We’ll enjoy birding in this lush reserve, followed by lunch at La Esmeralda. In the afternoon, we’ll travel back to Matias Romero, with opportunities for bird-watching along the way. Overnight stay back at Hotel Maria in Matias Romero. Dinner will be at 19:30.
Day 7 - Palomares - Juchitán de Zaragoza
Early breakfast at 6:00, followed by packing the car at 6:40. At 7:00, depart for Palomares, a prime location for spotting tropical bird species, located 40 minutes from the hotel. Lunch will be at Boca de Monte. In the afternoon, we’ll travel to Juchitán, a drive of approximately 2.5 hours. Overnight stay at Hotel Santa Cruz in Juchitán de Zaragoza. Dinner is scheduled for 19:30.
Day 8 - Ojo de Agua
Breakfast at 6:00, then a 6:40 departure for Ojo de Agua, a nearby birding hotspot, approximately 40 minutes from the hotel. Lunch will be in Union Hidalgo, followed by an afternoon visit to Estero Union Hidalgo for more bird-watching opportunities. Overnight stay at Hotel Santa Cruz in Juchitán de Zaragoza. Dinner will be served at 19:30.
Day 9 - Huatulco
Breakfast at 6:00, followed by packing the car at 6:40. Depart at 7:00 for Santa Maria Xadani, a scenic birding location approximately 40 minutes from the hotel. Lunch will be at La Tequita, featuring fresh seafood. In the afternoon, travel to Huatulco, a 3.5-hour drive. Check-in at Hotel Mexico Lindo in Huatulco. Dinner will be served at 19:30.
Day 10 - Santa Cruz- Huatulco
Begin the day with breakfast at 6:00, then depart at 6:40 for Santa Cruz, just 10 minutes from the hotel, for a pelagic bird-watching trip. Lunch will be at the beach, featuring seafood. At 14:00, enjoy some free time to relax or explore. At 16:00, reconvene for birding at Parque Nacional Huatulco, located 20 minutes from the hotel. Return to Hotel Mexico Lindo in Huatulco. Dinner is scheduled for 19:30.
Day 11 - Huatulco - Pluma Hidalgo
Early breakfast at 6:00, followed by a departure at 6:40 for morning birding at Parque Nacional Huatulco, approximately 20 minutes from the hotel. Return to the hotel by 11:00 to pack. Lunch will be in Huatulco. In the afternoon, travel to Pluma Hidalgo, a 1 hour and 20-minute drive, with birding stops along the way. Overnight stay at Finca Don Gabriel in Pluma Hidalgo. Dinner will be at 19:30.
Day 12 - San José del Pacífico
Breakfast at 6:00, then pack the car at 6:40. At 7:00, begin birding in Pluma Hidalgo, exploring its diverse habitats. Lunch will be on the road as we travel toward San José del Pacífico, approximately a 2-hour drive. Check-in at Cabins Puesta del Sol in San José del Pacífico. Dinner will be served at 19:30.
Day 13 - Come back to Oaxaca City
Morning birding around the cabins starting at 6:00, followed by breakfast at 7:30. At 8:00, pack the car and depart at 8:30 for El Manzanal, 20 minutes from the hotel. Lunch will be in Mihuatlan. In the afternoon, travel to Oaxaca City, a 2-hour drive, with arrival around 16:00 for free time to shop for souvenirs. Overnight stay at Hotel Maela in Oaxaca City. At 19:00, there will be a farewell meeting, followed by dinner at 19:30.
Day 14 - End of the trip
Breakfast at 7:00, followed by an 8:00 transfer to the Oaxaca Airport, marking the end of the tour.
