Itinerary
Day 1 - Oaxaca City
Arrival in Oaxaca City. Installation at Hotel Maela, located 30 minutes from the airport. At 18:30, a welcome meeting will be held to introduce the tour guides, go over the itinerary, and provide key information about the birding trip in Oaxaca. This is followed by dinner at 19:30, offering an opportunity to get to know fellow birding enthusiasts and discuss the species we aim to encounter during the tour.
Day 2 - Teotitlán
Early morning departure for a full day of bird-watching. Breakfast at 6:00 before leaving at 6:40 for Teotitlán del Valle, a hotspot known for its diverse habitats, including scrublands and oak forests that attract species like the Oaxaca Sparrow and Dwarf Jay. Arrive at Teotitlán del Valle (40 minutes from the hotel) and spend the morning birding. Lunch is scheduled at 13:00 in Teotitlán del Valle. In the afternoon, visit local rug weavers to experience Oaxaca’s rich cultural heritage. Return to Hotel Maela at 17:00, with a stop at the famous Tule Tree. Dinner will be at 19:30 back at the hotel.
Day 3 - Birding + San José del Pacífico
The day starts with breakfast at 6:00, followed by packing the car for the day’s journey. Departure at 7:00 for La Cumbre, a birding hotspot known for its high-altitude cloud forests that provide habitats for species such as the Red Warbler and Mountain Trogon (50 minutes from the hotel). Lunch will be enjoyed in the mountain area. In the afternoon, transfer to San José del Pacífico, which is about a 3-hour drive. Arrive at Cabins Puesta del Sol in San José del Pacífico for an overnight stay. Dinner will be served at 19:30.
Day 4 - El Manzanal
Early morning bird-watching around the cabins, starting at 6:00. Breakfast will be at 7:30, followed by packing up the car. Departure at 8:30 for El Manzanal, a nearby birding location just 20 minutes from the hotel, known for its varied flora that supports diverse bird species. In the afternoon, travel to Pluma Hidalgo, a 1 hour and 20-minute drive, with bird-watching opportunities along the road. The day concludes with an overnight stay at Finca Don Gabriel in Pluma Hidalgo. Dinner is scheduled for 19:30.
Day 5 - Pluma Hidalgo
Early morning birding around the Finca starting at 6:20, exploring the diverse habitats that attract species unique to the region. Breakfast at 8:00, followed by packing the car at 8:40. At 9:00, head out for birding above Pluma Hidalgo, a prime area known for its rich bird diversity. In the afternoon, travel to Huatulco, a 1.5-hour drive, arriving around 16:00 for an afternoon birding session in Huatulco’s tropical surroundings. Check-in at Hotel Mexico Lindo in Huatulco and settle in. Dinner will be served at 19:30.
Day 6 - Santa Cruz
Start the day with breakfast at 6:00, then leave at 6:40 for Santa Cruz, just 10 minutes from the hotel, to embark on a pelagic bird-watching trip. Enjoy lunch on the beach, featuring fresh seafood. After lunch, transfer to Puerto Escondido, arriving in the afternoon. Overnight stay at Hotel La Playita Beach House in Puerto Escondido. Dinner is scheduled for 19:30.
Day 7 - Return to Oaxaca City
Breakfast at 6:00, followed by packing the car at 6:40. Depart at 7:00 for Colotepec Lagoon, a 20-minute drive, where you’ll explore the lagoon’s bird-rich habitats. Lunch will be at El Rosendal Palapa. In the afternoon, transfer back to Oaxaca City, a 3-hour drive, marking the end of the bird-watching trip. Arrival in Oaxaca offers the option for participants to either end the trip or stay in Puerto Escondido for additional relaxation.
